Short takes: Tech at loss from sideline to huddle

North Carolina quarterback Marquise Williams has a high time after beating Georgia Tech at its place. (Scott Cunningham/Getty Images)

Three quick hits, spinning off the updated Georgia Tech-North Carolina game column that can be found here:

  1. Coaching really matters. North Carolina was not perfect in its sideline administration (witness the choice of an unsuccessful onside kick early in the third quarter, even after the Tar Heels had scored the last 17 points). But their coaches had a markedly better day than those on the opposite sideline.

The reverse pass back to quarterback Marquise Williams – directly following a Tech turnover – was inspired in its execution and timing. The perfect play at the perfect juncture, catching Tech unaware and giving North Carolina its first lead.

And while the Tar Heels new defensive coordinator, former Auburn head guy Gene Chizik, was being overrun in the first half, it bears notice that his guys gave up only 51 rushing yards in the second half. His defenders played with much greater energy than did Tech’s at the end (see Williams running untouched for the game’s last touchdown).

  1. It is still startling when Justin Thomas is the second best quarterback on the field. But no denying that Williams, who devastated Tech last year with 463 yards of total offense, was the most dynamic performer this day.

Williams’ stat line was stuffed, from the 148 yards and two touchdowns on the ground to his touchdown reception on the razzle-dazzle play.

All the cool Thomas displayed when ascending to the quarterback throne last season has gone absent at crucial times this year. His fourth-quarter fumble was a punch to the heart Saturday.

For the first time this year, Tech lost the turnover battle, 2-0 (on his fumble and a Hail Mary interception at the close).

  1. Here it is only the first of October, and already it seems like Georgia Tech’s season now comes down to one game. I think you know what it is. It happens Nov. 28 when Georgia comes calling.

Of course, there is nothing mathematical that as yet eliminates the Yellow Jackets from the ACC championship game. Eyesight and common sense seem to indicate that is a fantasy.

How can this team, as it’s currently performing, win at Clemson next week (barring the vagaries of injury)? How can it go on any run that would salvage a return trip to Charlotte?

Trying to beat Georgia for a second year seems like the best chance at consolation, and the end of November seems so far away.

the complexity is really in the simplicity.  Tech has open passing lanes down field up to say 30 yards that are less risky and can involve all the ab's, bb's, and wr's. This means the Tech QB will not be under pressure to hit the pass in the final minute as he would have some practice at hitting passes during the game. How many passes are we talking about? Say 15 to 30 with a 60% plus ratio of completion for say 200 to 300 yards per game. It may not run down the play clock but it may put more points on the board, and  yes there is a risk of  turnover, but wasn't there a risk of being stopped on a 1 yard run. I say go for it, starting this week.

There is a ray of sunshine at the end of the rainbow.  With no more than one winnable game left, the entire leadership at Tech will finally understand what a pathetic style of coaching they have at the top.  Let's go through the list:  Bud Carson (great defensive coach with Pittt Steelers 4 superbowls) and assistant to Bobby Dodd, Peppar Rodgers assistant and player for Bobby Dodd, Bill Fulcher (total disaster gone in two years), Bill Curry (played for Bobby Dodd) with one great year (Black Watch), Bill Lewis considered an up and comer, but he couldn't recruit his coaches from East Carolina because they were the reason the team won.  They continued to have great seasons after Lewis left.  Bobby Ross came nexl, but this man could coach and took the team to the pinnacle of sharing the top spot with a cheating team (Colorado) who had help from cheating referees to even get to the title game.  Oh wait a minute they played Notre Dame (8-3) and should have lost except for more cheating referees.  But Ross loss a family member which ended his desire to coach college.  Who knows where the program would have gone with his coaching staff.  He left and Ross's coaching staff returned from Superbowl San Diego year to rebuild the program with the most dynamic offense Tech has ever had.  They were so popular that ESPN had them as regulars on the Thursday night game.  The coach left to only be fired before he could coach at Notre Dame, and next came a perpetually fired coach Chan Gailey from the pros.  I have to give him credit as a great recruiter who brought all star talent to the team.  He simply was too arrogant to let a real offensive coordinator run the game.  He had some success, but eventually he irritated enough people to get him fired.  Then comes Johnson who had immediate success with the left over recruits from Gailey.  Up and down ever since, but last year was a dream that made all the Tech fans happy because the planets aligned.  This year he returns to the up and down, with no hope of ever regaining the magic year.  I believe I've been fair with the coaches.  So goes the recent history of Tech coaches, and who knows what kind of coach will be next.

The only winnable game I see the remainder of this year is Georgia.  Thank goodness Mark Richt still coaches there.

@WAITUNTILNEXTYEAR Because they got handled by an Alabama team full of #1 recruiting classes?  haha.  That UGA team still beat South Carolina 52-20...the same SC team that beat UNC week one.  Meanwhile FSU just squeaked by Wake Forest, Va Tech just lost to East Carolina and Pitt, and Miami just lost to Cincinnati.   UGA wouldn't have come close to losing to any of those teams.

Add to that, UGA is going to want payback for last year.

GTBob

@MikeS777 Its always funny how UGA fans have to resort to conference coattails in every argument when they realize they are never going to win anything important.

Poor time management at end of first half.  Two incomplete passes in our last possession gave them plenty of time.  Why not continue to run?  Not one mention of this.

Did anybody notice that Brad Stewart had nobody covering him when we were in the red zone?

Happened a few times.  JT should have see this and changed plays, or is he allowed to?

A long season, not sure bball is going to change my mood!

WAITUNTILNEXTYEAR

@Jim70  Totally agree.  This game was lost in the final two minutes of the first half.  Horrific play calling and season killing loss.

The aggravation of this game was where was this Williams against South Carolina.  The unknown quarterback out there the second half could be in the running for the Heisman, the one in Charlotte was the worse quarterback performance I have seen this whole year. I will never have talent like that, few will, but I would hate to think God gave it to me and I took it to the grave unused.  But still why ,God, does the only people in the world that know this guy is a football player have to be Georgia Tech?

GT71
GT71

Big, Fast, Smart defenses can and do beat Tech.  Tech's offense is precise, but very, very predictable within certain scheme bounds.

Well-coached defenses make adjustments and finish strong.  Tech doesn't.  Coaching makes a difference.

A big, fast, smart and good-passing QB can eviscerate a Tech Defense. And often does.  Look at 3rd and long situations and let us know how Tech's D scores.

Tech is smallish on both sides of the ball and hide-bound to an offense that can score points if EVERYTHING goes well EVERY play.  Not otherwise.  And it just can't come from behind - or hold a lead if confronted with the above.

Last year, the stars aligned, the schedule was soft and Tech got EVERY single break.

Continue to be used to this,  It is the way it is for a school whose curriculum doesn't 'fit' the football type and has a coach who is SURE his is the only way and the highway is next door.

I'd like to think that totally BS call on 'targeting' on Gotsis made a difference, maybe it did.  And BTW - that WASN'T 'targeting' the head - he 'targeted' his whole body - they met like 2 lovers long parted - whole-body slam from toes to helmet.

But at least UGA got boat-raced...At home. By Bama.

@GT71

Yet another GT fan who keeps an eye on how UGA performs?

Even though your dolt buddy GTBob proclaims repeatedly how GT fans care nothing about the fortunes of UGA?

How could you?!

I mean, GTBob preaches the gospel, doesn't he?

He certainly seems to think so.

It could get very ugly in Death Valley. But anything can happen with GT football. GTboob. Being from a family of true die hard alums. uGA will always be one of the most important games of the year. You look very silly trying to prove otherwise.

Tech can circle UGA if they want, but I doubt it will be any consolation if they've lost 7 games by the time they play UGA.  Besides, I bet UGA will be more than ready for payback.

MikeS777
MikeS777

This is shaping up to be the worst season for Johnson yet.  Unless he pulls an upset in Death Valley next weekend, Tech will have 4 losses with half the season left including games with FSU, UGA, Miami, and Va Tech.  There's real chance this could end up as Johnson's first losing season at Tech.

I think the ACC has finally decided it's time to play the option.  Duke has played it very well for two years now, and Gene Chizik isn't going to let UNC roll over for it anymore.  Johnson basically made it this far based on his ACC record.  Those 4 years after the ACC Championship season, Johnson never had a losing ACC record which is why he even made a bowl game.  He was losing all his out of conference games that weren't paycheck games like Kansas, MTSU, BYU twice, and UGA all 4 years (even the bad UGA teams).

Dawgonnit

Another tough loss but here is my take.....the last three weeks were winnable games. We're not far off. I saw four or more players on offense who have not played a great amount that offer some hope...Stewart, Lynch, Davis,Mcclellan and Allen..(BB, WR, Abs)...What Tech lacks is toughness at this point on both sides of the ball, the instinct to finish it off.  At the same time, the opposing teams seem to be giving us the time of possession in return for points on the scoreboard. The passing lanes seem to be open which would put points on the board but would sacrifice time of possession.  Keep going for first down on 4th and 4 at the midfield line, but get more aggressive in the red zone to get first downs and touchdowns, even if it means more miscues for awhile.

Actually, the Dawgs mean everything to you losers. How many times the past 14 years did you expect GT to "boat race them by at least 25 points"?

How many times in those 14 years did GT in fact "boat race them by at least 25 points"?

Hello? Loser? Hello?

And that's despite being a loser to Bama.

@DawgNole If you want to take the opinion of one man, who isn't even slightly a GT fan as fact then go right ahead. Frankly, you can tell by the content of the blog that this Hummer guy was fairly ticked off that he had to watch this game while UGA was playing Bama.

GTBob

@DawgNole The Dogs mean nothing. Regardless of what this hack thinks, if we are 2-9 going into the UGA game, nobody is going to even slightly care whether we win or lose against UGA.

So only "one man" believes that the UGA-GT football series is meaningful?

You're an embarrassment to GT fans--and proud of it to boot.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgNole He is a hack because after we beat Clemson last year he decided to write a blog about how awful our attendance was and almost completely ignored the actual game itself. Frankly, im surprised they let him keep writing blogs after that debacle.

As for your claim that the vast majority of GT fans only care about the UGA game and nothing else, im going to need to see some actual data. Sorry, but I know a lot more GT fans than you do and I don't get the same impression. You are going to have to convince me why a random FSU/UGA fan knows more about GT than I do.

GTBob
GTBob

@DawgNole Only one man believes it is the only thing GT is playing for. He is trying to spread the same garbage that all UGA fans try to spread. Unfortunately for him he has no idea what actual GT fans think.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@DawgNole I'd call it wishful thinking. The fact is UGA is really all the Tech program cares about.  I guarantee that's why they hired Paul Johnson in the first place. They wanted a win over UGA, and hoped his unconventional option would give it to them.  They were willing to sacrifice all the recruiting momentum Chan Gailey had built up to do it too.

He got his win in 2008, and a huge contract extension.  So last year he finally gets win #2, and another contract extension.  At the end of the day, that's all this program cares about....stealing a win from UGA.

MikeS777
MikeS777

@GTBob @DawgNole Honestly I don't know a single Tech fan that doesn't have beating UGA on their mind.  I've been around a lot of them.  When the team looks bad, they don't say "Man I dont think we have a shot at the division title now."  No its always something like "Man UGA is going to kill us this year."

In an ideal world, UGA would just be some game on the schedule that doesn't make or break a season.  It really shouldn't.  But Tech fans never see it that way, nor do the boosters I'd wager.

I promise that the Tech game is the last thing on UGA fan's minds after the Bama beating today.  They want an SEC title or at least get back to the championship game.

DawgNole
DawgNole

@GTBob @DawgNole

"Nobody" cares if you beat UGA?
