Smart has all the golf hook-ups he’ll ever need

AUGUSTA – Bulldogs are scattered throughout the ranks of golf, some at the highest of levels. And it turns out that is one of the lesser known perks of being the head football coach at UGA.

Kirby Smart’s predecessor had little use for some 18-hole diversion, but the new guy kind of digs it. As he recently told DawgNation’s Chip Towers: “I love golf.

“I don’t play much anymore. Even when I have down time I don’t get to play much anymore. I mean, I’ve got three kids and it’s just not fair to go play a four-hour round. Now my Dad loves golf, too, so the time I spend with my dad is when I play golf.”

So, during some scarce down time early this spring, when Smart wanted to share some quality time with dad in Florida, he called former Bulldog Kevin Kisner for help. And just like that, the Smarts had a tee time at Arnie’s place in Orlando, Bay Hill.

There are four former Bulldogs playing this week at the Masters. They are Bubba Watson, Kisner, Chris Kirk and Harris English. That doesn’t include Patrick Reed, who transferred out under less than ideal circumstances.

Smart has played Augusta National once before, years ago after first arriving at Alabama as an assistant. He shouldn’t have much trouble getting on again, given the hierarchy.

Augusta National chairman Billy Payne was an all-SEC defensive end at Georgia in 1968. Payne’s son, W. Porter Payne, and Smart were fraternity brothers. Needless to say, Smart will not suffer for a hook up when he gets the urge to play a round and perhaps enjoy a club sandwich on the veranda.

And getting a Masters badge would never be a problem – and if only the SEC would scrap this silly idea of practicing football in April, he could actually attend the tournament someday.

But this is spring practice, and football coaches being football coaches, Smart has trouble just talking about golf now.

In the end, he could not resist reverting to the single-minded leader of young men.

“My goal right now, and I’m being dead honest with you, is to win football games,” he told Towers. “I’m not worried about playing Augusta National. (But) if I get the opportunity to, I want to. Yes.”

Smart may end up being a golf coach at UGA..

He won't be football coach after the dawgs

win only 6 games this year in football..UGA

isn't Bama and losses will make that clear..

I see the new blog format continues to break records in total number of posts

I guess the days of 300 to a 1000 posts on most of the articles still aren't  as good as the 30 or less posts on this new format per article

…….and 30 of those posts typically come from just a handful of bloggers now

way to go.

Why can't people just appreciate the great traditions grounded in UGA/TECH sports history, instead of engaging in sophomoric digs at each other?....Ooops, I forgot...As a lifelong UGA fan, we never give a techie credit for anything!...GO DAWGS!

@Dumbmick  It's all in good fun.  I have nothing against Georgia Tech.  I just think their athletic programs are mostly an embarrassment to the state of Georgia.  That's all.  I also think they have the worst and most pathetic fans in all of the sporting world.  Once again, it's all in good fun and nothing personal at all.  I personally just can't stand them and loathe them with an unimaginable passion.  It's nothing for anyone to get bent out of shape about.

@dawg fan @Dumbmick Hey Big dawg fan, if GT is

such an embarrassment to the state , why could the mighty leghumpers only beat us by

2 big field goals last year.. Your program underachieves every year and more players

at Clarke county jail than in the dorms.

Dawgs win 6 games in 2016 and you will be

happy with that homer!!

There's usually a lot of talk about the dawgs being relevant again this time of year....and now the "Chosen Ones" have arrived.........sunshine and lollipops now!

@TOJacket Yes, there is usually a lot of talk about the Dawgs at all times of the year.  Tell me something I don't know.  You can start by naming someone on your football roster.  I can't name a single player.  Most people would be surprised to know you even have a football team.  There's something to talk about.

@TOJacket I hear outside the Top 10 and the dog will cry underrated. But that's it. dogs cry.

@dawg fan @TOJacket We know the dog players.. Mostly girls like Girley, Chubby Chita and

Solli Michelle.... You have no football team. NC

will boat race the pups and GT will win by 20 points..

There's always a lot of jealousy and hatred out of the Techie nerdherd when the Masters rolls around.  This is the stuff that really really just kills them.  They're used to all the losses on the playing field but they just can't handle this stuff.  God it must suck to be them.

@dawg fan Once again for your reading enjoyment.....More NC, more Conference championships, more recent NC and more recent Conference championship, not to mention the names of Heisman and Dodd, the namesakes of the most prestigious Player and Coaching awards in CFB. Yea, that's hard to compare to Herschel Walker and panty sports championships.............LOL!!!....try to finish higher than 3rd this year in the SEC Least.....that must suck!

@TOJacket A lot of good all that's been doing you.  We've won 13 of the last 15 against you in football and your washed up has been basketball program is about to have to run a help wanted ad to find a coach.  Tech athletics are an embarrassing disgrace.  Nice try.

@dawg fan @TOJacket Hey dawg fan, most times I enjoy your post....you guys have the "Chosen One" now.......oh yea, how about JJ Green, and Marcus Marshall?....Giddy up!

@dawg fan @TOJacket ......... I would say Tech has beaten the Dawgs for the last time for a while.

MIGHT catch a lackluster Richt left over roster win next year, But going forward, Don't see much winning, but hey, Even Richt took 13 of 15.

@TOJacket "what have the dawgs won lately?"  A lot of games over your joke football program.  I've already answered that question.

dawg fan

@TOJacket JJ Green was too small for big boy SEC football and would barely crack the scout team under our new regime.  He's a perfect fit for a middling ACC Coastal team though.  Who in the hell is Marcus Marshall?  Never heard of him.

TOJacket

@dawg fan @TOJacket Keith's little brother......guess that's 2 "middling" teams he couldn't hack it on?....UGA is the poster child for "middling".......Oh yea, and once again congrats on beating a top 50 recruiting team with a top 10...oops, I forgot you guys soiled your panty's against us just 2 years ago.....hang that hat DF! The one thay call "The Deliverer" has arrived.

@dawg fan @TOJacket Remember

TOJacket the dogs were mighty

last year and won by two big fields goals. A football mill beating

the Institute by two big field goals. The dawgs are a joke and weakest in the SEC..
