Georgia-Tech rivalry just doesn’t look the same in shorts

One day, we may continue to dream, the Georgia-Georgia Tech basketball game will generate at least as much heat as a single intermission during Tuesday night’s gathering.

One day, maybe, this rivalry in its underwear will touch off the kind of widespread animosity of when it is dressed up in helmets and body armor.

The biggest cheer during this season’s basketball meeting at Tech’s McCamish Pavilion (another name for a gym) came with both teams nestled in their seats. At the first time-out of the second half, highlights of last month’s Tech football victory over Georgia played on the mid-court arena scoreboard. And on cue, members of the Yellow Jacket football team emerged to parade the trophy given each year to the winner of the interstate football blood-letting.

The Governor’s Cup they call it.

The winner of the basketball rivalry game doesn’t even get a Commissioner of Agriculture Cup.

So, it remains that by comparison to its football equivalent, the Georgia-Georgia Tech basketball rivalry is still a good, old-fashioned quilting bee.

Georgia had a 10-point lead at the time of the parade of football champions. It ended up winning by 17 (60-43). So take that Yellow Jackets.

“I didn’t even know it happened,” said Bulldogs coach Mark Fox. So much for him taking an incendiary report back to Kirby Smart.

This state has deserved forever a basketball rivalry with real teeth. A meeting of two teams with an abiding dislike for one another. Two teams head-to-head in the recruiting wars for the very best players in a talent-rich state. Two teams needing a high-gloss December victory that will still look good when the NCAA tournament bracket is made. It doesn’t have to be North Carolina-Duke or Kentucky-Louisville. Just something with a little consequence beyond an evening’s idle entertainment.

As entertaining as a game can be that featured a combined shooting percentage of .360 and a combined assist-to-turnover ratio of 21-to-29.

About the only lasting damage that Tuesday could have wrought would have been to Georgia’s ambitions for March. Losing to a rebuilding Tech would have been a large wart on the resume. Didn’t happen, thus the Bulldogs remain viable, very capable of making enough noise in the SEC to earn a NCAA bid. With the experienced inside-outside combination of Yante Maten and J.J. Frazier (neither of whom lit up Tech), nothing less should be palatable.

For Georgia Tech, the challenge for Josh Pastner: Can he better the dire predictions of the athletic director who hired him? Before leaving for Purdue Mike Bobinski reportedly told his new coach he might not win a game in the ACC. These Yellow Jackets are young and are not terribly adept at stimulating a scoreboard. Immediate expectations remain below sea level.

The symbol of where Tech is now: Freshman guard Josh Okogie, one of the bright spots for the future, attempting to fly along the baseline and author a highlight dunk. Only to wedge the ball between the bottom of the rim and the backboard. No, Tech is not anywhere near ready to soar just yet.

But fans will afford these Yellow Jackets leniency. Because a victory over Georgia around Thanksgiving time makes a loss in December so much more digestible.

One point win over the "irrelevant" Dawgs has got this nerd feeling real tough and brave.  What do you want to bet the second his joke team loses to the Dawgs he's one of the first to whip out a bunch of sore loser crybaby excuses about academics and resources and then claim the game doesn't even matter?  The bigger the Techie mouth the more of a freaking joke they clearly are.  Georgia Tech=JOKE.

@bobbyross1990 Very original.  Redneck.  Trailer trash.  Did you think of that yourself?  If you Tech fans were half as smart as you claim to be you'd think you idiots my be able to come up with some new material.  You've only been saying the same BS for about 20 or 30 years now at least.  My 2nd grade kid has more creativity than you dimwits.  Georgia Tech fans=STUPID.

what im waiting for is an article on the number of ugag athletes who graduated. seems like that piece of  journalism is missing every year wrt ugag.

gt graduated 22 athletes recently including football players. all with degrees that actually matter. we dont have to have a support group for our unemployed athletes like ugag does. arent you gagers ashamed YET?

but hey yall did report that two of your players are coming back to wipe that nasty taste of DE FEET from their mouths that the jackets left.  lmao.  and i bet they STILL wont have their degrees. *sic*

btw did jamal anderson accept the offer to become an official dwag fan yet?  maybe he even has some eligibility left.

Total lack of class to show the highlights of the tech/uga game.  Must have been a CPJ idea. What a snarky jerk.

@Chilidawg  The Georgia game conveniently only means something to Fish Fry when he wins it.  That's pretty obvious when you look at the comments he's made over the years about the rivalry and how he reacts to wins and losses.  He's 1,000% bush league and a perfect fit for the Joke by Coke.

@Chilidawg You guys put a hype video on the big screen between the 3rd and 4th quarters of the football game, that's why we whooped ya butts in the 4th quarter. Man you guys are some whiners.

@TOJacket And then when he doesn't he has "bigger fish to fry" and Georgia doesn't define Tech because we've never done anything.  Both are comments your bush league joke coach has made after losses.  A real fearless leader you've got there.  Georgia Tech=JOKE.

@TOJacket Hey moron that's a football hype video at a football game.  Let us know when we stoop to the level of playing football highlights at a basketball game over a supposedly "irrelevant" opponent who does not "define" our program.  Georgia Tech=JOKE.

@Chilidawg leave it to a dwag to spell his own nic wrong. snicker.

maybe we wanted to let people know we won. after all  you dwags turned off the score board before the game officially ended. doh. POOR LOSERS!

and speaking of poor sports... wasnt it you dwags who turned the sprinklers BEFORE the jackets bb team could leave the field after yet another win by the jackets a few years ago?  what is really disturbing is that this team of jackets helped collect money for an injured dwag player.  (see vince dooley and auburn for more hosings_).  POOR LOSERS!

and speaking of class.  what other major college fan base routinely dumps tons and tons and tons of trash on its own campus. urinates in public during game day and defecates in its own classrooms and its OWN LIBRARY.  keep it classy dwags.

i hear the dwags have offered jamal anderson a spot on their staff. they like how he 'operates'.

i would expect nothing less from the dwags!

charlestonian77

@dawg fan @TOJacket so why turn off the scoreboard before the game ended?

talk about poor losers?  did you have enough time to get out to the parking lot to key up some jacket cars?

that is yet another thing that happens only in athens.

@dawg fan @TOJacket  our 'bush league' coach just beat your new saban toy.

even though you have a team of 4 and 5 stars playing against a team of hs ''has beens.''  speaks volume about ugag

@charlestonian77 Your bush league coach has been a head coach for nearly 20 years but is still only 11-13 the past two seasons but here you are kissing his moobs like he's Knute freaking Rockne.  Kirby has been a coach for a grand total of ONE year and you're ready to write him off after a 7-5 season.  You=JOKE.  Georgia Tech=JOKE.

@dawg fan @TOJacket you wouldn't know if Georgia played a hype video at a basketball game because Dog fans don't even know they have a team until they beat Tech

@Chilidawg

Why is there a lack of class there?  It's OUR basketball arena, and we can do any damn thing we want to there.  And CPJ has absolutely nothing to do with what happens there, the same as CJP has nothing to do with what happens in Bobby Dodd Stadium.  The AD chose that opportunity to show off the trophy and members of the team to the fans and students.  The only thing most mutts know about class is that it is a word used to describe meetings that are held for the students throughout the day each day of the week, and that attendance at those meetings is apparently optional to the mutt athletes.

dawg fan
dawg fan

@SupersizeThatOrder-mutt Yeah, its real classy to claim that our athletes don't go to class when you have absolutely zero evidence to back it up and are only saying it because you're a crybaby sore loser hater who is owned by UGA.  That's real classy nerd.  Let me know when UGA fans attack your student-athletes like you low lifes routinely attack ours and then we can talk about class. Georgia Tech fans=JOKE

@SupersizeThatOrder-mutt He is 3-6 overall and has yet to win a game in that dump stadium of yours.  After losses he routinely dismisses the importance of the game but after wins he prances around like a giddy school boy who just won the Super Bowl.  All of this is on camera and cannot be denied.  He's a clown.  Sorry bro.

SupersizeThatOrder-mutt

@dawg fan

The ONLY time that he "dismissed" the importance of the game was in 2009, when we still had the ACC championship game to play.  Any coach in the country would probably have made a similar remark. And when the players on a team make tremendous efforts to pull out a victory at the end of a game, I would bet any coach in the country would act in a similar fashion, I guess you've never seen Dabo go crazy after a come-from-behind win by the Tigers. You're just a sore loser.  "Sorry bro"  Bwah ha ha

@SupersizeThatOrder-mutt Absolutely not true.  A couple of years later a reporter asked him if the UGA game defined Tech football and he is still trying to get his panties unbunched from it.  He trashed our program and coach in response like a low class punk and said we don't define Tech because we haven't done anything.  If a UGA coach ran his mouth like this punk North avenue would be a river of freaking tears from you crybabies.

Not much of a rivalry when you have one average and one below-average team. Hard to get excited about this game.

With no disrespect to the current GT players, the cupboard was left relatively bare of ACC talent by CBG.  CJP got a late start with recruiting the loaded 2017 class.  This season along with next will require patience from the Tech faithful.  Given how relentless CJP is with recruiting, I am confident that by year 3, we will be on the path to greatness again on the basketball court or at least a competitive product on the court.

UpWithTheWhiteAndGold

Last night was painful to watch. I have no other words to describe it than bad basketball. The first half was almost comical. Georgia, to their credit, showed some signs of a basketball team in the second half and rightfully pulled away.

I'm hoping Pastner can turn the wreck around and get Tech back on the map. It looks like a very long journey from our vantage point after the game last night.

@UpWithTheWhiteAndGold Any time a college team is held below 50 points, there is some defense being played.

Of course, the writer(?) of this article doesn't know that-or much of anything else about BB-or much else in the sporting world.

Tech is obviously starting over from scratch this year so the win means little, but as a UGA fan, it's nice to see the team on a "off night" win by 17 on the road-no matter how bad the competition is-and for Tech fans, you really should do some research on how Pastner is viewed in Memphis. It's not comforting.
