Tech right where it wants to be – discounted by media

Paul Johnson celebrates Georgia Tech’s Orange Bowl victory to close the 2014 season. Not bad considering the media picked him to finish fifth in his conference that season. (Chris Trotman/Getty Images)

We can’t know how Georgia Tech’s quarterback search will play out. Or know the answer to the eternal question of whether the 2017 version will play just enough defense to keep game day interesting.

Fairly certain, though, that the Yellow Jackets will run the ball.

But Monday they got the best news in weeks – certainly since the highly celebrated announcement that they were switching apparel lines. (By the reaction, you would think they had been sponsored by Dickies, and found the bib overalls a little confining on game days).

There was the surest indication yet that this team has a chance to contend when it was selected by the ACC media to finish a modest third in an entire division looking for a quarterback, the Coastal. For the analytics of preseason predictions clearly show that the fortunes of Paul Johnson’s Jackets are inversely proportionate to the guesswork of July.

There is nothing Johnson likes better than to prove the fallibility of a media corps that consistently undervalues his recruiting and his option offense. He has acquired quite a taste for that flavor of vinegar because almost every year the Yellow Jackets have out-performed the annual poll of media working the ACC Kickoff. The one year Tech was picked first in its division – 2015 – everybody got hurt and it finished last. The AJC’s Ken Sugiura actually broke down Tech and the media poll, because that is what Ken Sugiura does.

These same Nostradamuses of the news media decided that in his second season, Mark Richt will take Miami to a place it has yet to visit – the ACC Championship game after winning the Coastal. (How can it be that Miami has never played for an ACC title? That beggars belief.) And Florida State was the flavor of the moment in the national championship flight of the conference – the Atlantic Division – over defending champion Clemson. How many shake-ups can one crystal ball contain?

As soon as the results were announced, Johnson should have sent cheese baskets to all the voters for the favor done him. (I abstained, since I really don’t feel qualified to rank the fortunes of programs like Syracuse, Boston College or Pitt. At least until I learn the name of single player or for that matter who’s coaching the Orange since Dick McPherson left to coach the Patriots).

Georgia is answering to entirely different expectations. The SEC media knighted it the favorite to win the East.

Hey, I’ve seen these people who are doing the voting. We’re sportswriters, an entire tribe of who had to find a fallback after we couldn’t get into law school. This vote of confidence could mean real trouble, Bulldogs.

Sure.  "Discounted by the media" but in this very publication we have been treated to the following headlines in just the past couple days:

"Paul Johnson among 19 coaches on Dodd trophy watch list."

"Athlon sports ranks Mills, Lynch in best running back tandems."

"Georgia Tech's Derrick Mills names to pre-season All-ACC team."

And my personal favorite considering the Joke is 5-11 in league play the past 2 seasons . . .

"Coastal opponents on Georgia Tech:  'Ugh - that triple option."

Tech fans are of course incredibly stupid people so let me be very clear here:  I am not here to quibble with the merit of these headlines.  I am here to laugh at the crybaby victim mentality that permeates Georgia Tech football and how Hummer panders to it with this freaking joke of a column.  Thanks.

@dawg fan Why do you have to laugh at me when I cry.  You are violating my rights as a tech fan.  I am dumb and triggered.  By the way, do you really get angry when you read an article about sports.  Do you read the article and then get up and start stomping your feet.  DawgFan..."I just read this article and I am really mad!! It said Paul Johnson is on a watch list. (smoke now coming out of dawgfans ears).   I know, I'll go write a paragraph about how much I don't like them.  I'll call them nerds too.."  Everyone on Earth..."OK cool, can someone pull the bread out of the oven so we can eat"

people obviously dont realize, tech has a load of a back in mills and a homerun hitter in lynch. Searcy is a nice weapon as well. Cant wait for the season.

Paul Johnson knows his offense and says he has four QBs he likes.  I would not be surprised is finds one of them to be an very adequate replacement for Justin Thomas. With that said Tech looks to be much stronger that the sports writers give Tech credit for.

No football program in this state is worth a damn.  Nothing but losers.

I'm amazed how stupid a bunch of supposed smart people are. You won't beat Georgia this year and we aren't losing 5 games again. And yes, you should be afraid of Chubb.

@DawginLex Let me see.... what teams in this region have won national championships in football in the last 30 years....

Georgia Tech

Alabama

Florida State

Clemson

Auburn

Tennesssee

Florida

Miaimi

Notice what team is missing in the list?   UGA

You UGA fans think a lot of yourselves considering you haven't been relevant where it counts (national championship) since 1980.

@DawginLex The dogs won't lose 5 games this year. It will be 6 losses or more. GT will boat race the dogs in Atlanta.

We run this state dog...

I see that it's time again for your usual preseason procession of imbecilic predictions. Guess you're through licking your wounds from last season's gems.

This oughta be fun.

Like I said, recruiting is one thing, coaching is another. Kirby recruits with the best of them for sure(though I'm not sure how), but he's got a lot to prove if he's the next Dooley. There was nothing wrong with Mark Richt and it will bite uga in the butt. No pun intended ;)

DawginLex

Mark Richt went 5-10 against Florida and crapped away multiple years where we should have been in Atlanta

If you don't see something wrong with that, I can't help you

@DawginLex 10 win seasons just about every year. I don't need any help. Just your delusional fan base. Thanks again.

@bobbyross1990 Kirby's secret to recruiting:  he brought all the dirty tricks perfected by Alabama to Athens.  HIs statewide network of alumni bagmen, for starters.

Remind me the next time I pass thru Athens to stop and see the pre-season championship trophy case.

Losing to Tech gets our coaches fired. If Kirby wants to stick around, he won't repeat it. Chubb openly stated he decided to return after we blew the Tech game. We won't lose this year.

@DawginLex I am afraid you will lose to GT again.

The dogs will also lose another 5 games as well.

Too funny. Every year Tech gets underestimated and Georgia gets overestimated. Never fails.

This might hurt a little if your joke program wasn't 4-13 against us since the turn of the century and we actually gave a flying schitt what you think. Why don't you idiots try beating us with a little more regularity and then running your mouths? Oh that's right, it's nothing but excuses out of you cowards when you don't beat us.

I'd rather be 0-12 every year than a trash talking coward who roots for a pile of crap program like Georgia Tech.

@dawg fan Coward is a stretch. We have tried to bravely and uncowardly to compete, but the record is one of an exercise in futility. The record would be similar to us beginning to play Georgia Southern as a state rival instead of Georgia. We would win all the games. I advocate real competition and not playing an uncompetitive game. A heavyweight boxer is not allowed to compete against a lighter weight boxer such as a middleweight because it would not be a competitive bout. That's how it is against Georgia. That's also how it is against Clemson. I recommend that Tech only play against Georgia and Clemson if we are good enough to go to a bowl game and get matched with them. Tech's program isn't any pile of crap by any means, and it never has been since Heisman was there. For Georgia though, they wouldn't want to play the Atlanta Falcons for the state title. Now should Tech keep the ramblin' wreck song? Nope, not if we drop playing Georgia. Beating them and closing the record gap wouldn't work out if singing "to Hell with Georgia" would be an exercise in futility to accomplish. Tech would not expect to beat the Falcons and would not be ashamed about that. Reality is what Tech needs to confront.

@dawg fan Those dogs are tough aren't they.

Why didn't the dogs line up Nicolls State again..lol What an over rated pile of crap

that team in Athens has become..

Yeah moron you make tons of sense. The coach you idiots claim we should still have left us that mess last year. Yet you think we will regret firing him???

Tech must have lowered the academic standards

Two thoughts here:

1.  Two of the last three is pretty regular

2.  An inability to win regularly doesn't seem to stop the trash talking uga does when it gets those rare wins against Florida...
